LIBERALIZATION AND MTV IN THE 90s ERA.

On a rainy evening, in July of 2021, when the electricity was cut off, and I had nothing to do because I was working on a computer, (I did not have a Laptop at time.)

I grabbed my phone and randomly decided to watch some short movies.

I saw ‘MAYA” a short film by Aniruddha Roy Chowdhary by Largeshortfilms.

And here it is representation of what might have happened in the film.

This is 1993.An era of liberalization has just began.

Maya is here a representation of a girl who loves the idea of being unique(as the uniqueness is understood to be a virtue in western in western civilization.)She hates being ordinary and simple though she knows Tamil, Bangla (regional languages) as well as Hindi and English.

She adored western ideas and preferred coffee over tea, read life magazine, loved MTV ,loved the pop music.

On the other hand Anjan is typical representation of Indian boy belonging to middle class, having preference of moral and ethical value I order to be assumed as “good boy’. But in reality, he is struggling with his identity in this whole idea of benign cool (such in western context) supersedes his own idea of good boy.

Something a woman still struggles with in 2021.

Anjan is attracted towards Maya.

His crush towards Maya is growing stronger and stronger as he sees this bold and beautiful girl day by day during his piano training.

He even tried to attract her towards himself in his timid and shy away.

Ultimately, he converse with the girl by imposing other identity on himself.

This conversation has the edge over Maya’s psychology as he has minutely observe her during music lesson.

Though the ultimate motive of Anjan is to just attract this beautiful girl(as finds himself trapped within image of good boy and shyness during face to face meeting with Maya.)

He doesn’t not deceive her in any way.

But unknowingly he finds the Maya is attracted towards the false image of his imposter reckless identity.

As Maya tells him about her love for this unknown person although, she doesn’t even know his name, but merely on his basis of cool-reckless image, she falls for him.

Anjan founds himself lost the battle of love due to his own misrepresentation.

He is very unhappy causing pain in the life of the person he loves most.

Thus ultimately packs the bag of imposter identify and once again goes back to music (in the first scene his mom tell him to carry the Tiffin cause he will be late, he tells mom that he is going to music class that’s why he is late even on Saturday)

In the last scene too he picks up his Tiffin so probably is going back to his piano lessons) with the fear in his heart that the person he loved most will be heartbroken, that the person he loved most will be heartbroken because she thinks the idea of someone unknown knowing her so accurately has mystical novel destiny with an element of mystery (human nature love mystery is a no surprise).

In overall sense the whole plot can be summarized as a human journey in which we prefer a complete different idea about life, society civilization, beyond our own native values,(we also tend to prefer western values and ides rather than indigenous values and idea) thus resulting in overall sorrow for each.

Mystery becoming misery.

MTV has always been upfront in bringing new western ideas as it has its Target audience from 12-30 age demographics.

MTV sill hosts TV shows that’s caters to the incredibly young audience giving them a sense of freedom and modernization.

I am sure it has a significant role to play in own teenage lives.
